The goal of the activity profession is to offer residents/clients
opportunities to continue life long interests while minimizing
the negative impact that physical and cognitive limitations may
have on their participation. This is accomplished, in some cases,
through adaptation or modification of the activity.
Guidelines
prior to adapting or changing the program/activity:
*Know the
residents/clients strengths, abilities and skills.
*Do not
focus on negatives or what they cannot do.
*Know the
activity well, how to conduct it without hesitation and various
ways to conduct the program.

Techniques
Materials
: large print bingo cards; built up handles on brushes, pencils;
or larger designs in crafts.
Procedure or rules : Change the rules or how you do the game to
make it simpler or less complicated; eliminate the rules if you
have to.
Skill sequencing
: Where the various tasks of the activity are broken into smaller
steps and residents/clients are given smaller tasks which are
later incorporated into the whole activity again. Ex. assembly
line project or task.
Lead up
activity : Where one activity or action prepares them for a bigger
or more complex activity or action. Ex. exercise programs prepare
them for many ADL or ambulation programs.
When modifying
the activity, REMEMBER ......
Keep the activity as close to the
original form as possible
Modify
only parts of the activity needing changing to adjust to a particular
limitation in the resident/client
Individualize as much as possible.
The overall goals are to allow for success, prevent sense of failure
and maintain resident/client participation in tasks and activities
of interest.
