It's SPRING and time to think of outside programs such as gardening.
Horticultural or garden therapy
uses plants and nature to heal and rehabilitate people of all
ages and all abilities. Plants and nature can be integrated into
most activities. Remember that plants are nonthreatening and nonjudgmental.
All you need to do is give the plant what it needs and the plant
will flourish and so will the person caring for it.
Here are some ideas for Spring
time programs.....
*Plant an outside garden in large
containers or wheelchair accessible planters. Remember, plants
in containers need frequent watering.
*Cool weather vegetables such
as radishes, onions, carrots, broccoli, lettuce and spinach should
be planted in April. If planting in the ground have the soil tested
by the agricultural department.
*Plant pansies outside and continue
pinching back for continued growth. Pick pansies, violas and wild
flowers in full bloom for pressing. Use pressed
flowers to make cards.
*Make corsages or flower arrangements
for Secretaries Day, April 25.
*Pinch back mums until mid July
for fuller plants.
*Take cuttings of houseplants
for baskets to put outside this summer.
*Celebrate Earth
Day, with an outside activity such as a nature walk around
the building.
*If the residents or clients are
not able to get outside, invite a Scout troop to visit and bring
nature inside with plants, seedpods and leaves. Make a nature
craft together.
*Plant a flowering tree such as
a dogwood for Arbor Day,
the last Friday in April.
*Prepare for Mother's Day celebration,
May 13. Make flower arrangements, corsages or herb planters for
all Moms.
*Have a "flower show"
with flowers and arrangements sent for Easter or Mother's Day.
The day after these holidays, invite and assist residents to bring
their flowers to the common area. Create a display and encourage
residents to share about their flowers and who gave them.
SPRING is a busy time. Make some time for you and your staff to unwind.
Remember to STOP AND SMELL THE FLOWERS.

Therapy Sites for more ideas and resources.
