September, October and November IS .....

FIRST DAY OF AUTUMN - SEPTEMBER 21ST

NATIONAL NATIVE AMERICAN MONTH - NOVEMBER

NATIONAL GEORGIA PECAN MONTH - NOVEMBER

Autumn is such a beautiful season filled with scents of apple pies, cinnamon or pumpkins and the changing colors of the trees. Take advantage of these opportunities for sensory stimulation by nature. Remember everyday there are changes outside. Bring them inside to share with your residents and clients. Invite community groups such as Scouts or schools to be your helping hands

Horticultural or garden therapy uses plants and nature to heal and rehabilitate people of all ages and all abilities. Plants and nature can be integrated into most activities. Remember that plants are nonthreatening and nonjudgmental. All you need to do is give the plant what it needs and the plant will flourish and so will the person caring for it.

Here are some ideas for Autumn time programs.....

* Collect and press flowers, herbs, and colorful leaves.

*This is apple season. Pick, eat and make baked apples or apple sauce or dry to make apple ornaments or apple wreaths.

* Decorate mini pumpkins with dried flowers, cinnamon sticks and hemlock pine cones.

*Expect frost by mid-October. Clean up outside garden and bring in tender plans such as geraniums, begonias, or rosemary and basil.

*Collect and dry pods, seeds and pine cones for fall and winter crafts.

*Pick any green tomatoes before frost, make fried green tomatoes to eat as a snack while watching the video "Fried Green Tomatoes".

*September is the time to buy bulbs for fall planting. They will bloom next SPRING. Plant daffodils in October. Wait until November to plan tulips.

*Before the leaves fall, collect various shapes and sizes for leaf rubbings or leaf prints.

* Make a bouquet garni with herbs such as parsley, thyme, marjoram and bay leaf.

* Plant colorful mums or ornamental cabbages outdoors.

*Collect wine bottles and make herbal vinegars. Use for holiday bazaars or gifts.

*Keep house plants clean and check for insects. Remember : clean plants are healthy plants.

Autumn is an invigorating time. Enjoy the change of pace but never forget to
STOP AND SMELL THE FLOWERS.
