December 1st - Eat a Red Apple Day
*Gather various types of red apples and have
a tasting contest.
Then make a dried apple & cinnamon wreath.
December 1st - National Pie Day
*Bake several types of pies involving all-natural
ingredients.
Ask the participants to choose the pies and mix the ingredients
themselves.
Have a bake sale!
December 14th - National Cookie Day
* Bake cookies with real cocoa, nuts or fruits.
December 15th - National Cocoa Day
December 19th - National Oatmeal Muffin Day
December 14th -National Egg Nog Day
* Make fresh egg nog and have a holiday party.
December 25th -National Pumpkin Day
* Have fun with these holidays and special
days. Research the traditions of the holiday and
incorporate them into your activity. Use fresh items when able,
and involve the
participants whenever possible. Most traditions involve fresh
fruits, and flowers
use them and have fun!
Horticultural ideas
for December....
- Fill bird feeders outside windows and main
areas to attract out feathered friends.
Make bird feeders with pinecones
and peanut butter, or even dried bagels!
- Buy and inexpensive shop light with a 40
watt florescent bulb from a
local home improvement store and set up a small indoor garden!
Make sure the light is in a safe area and secured properly.
You can enjoy blooming plants
all winter and even start seeds!
- Order seeds from catalogs, especially those
that need an early start!
- Plants such as dwarf evergreens shrubs,
and conifers, ivy, heathers, ornamental
cabbages and pansies can be potted separately and make great
outdoor displays!
They can be brought indoors for a sensory program, or for a
gardening group to prune and care for them.
- Make a living
wreath with a group. Use a wreath wire frame, garbage bags,
floral foam and evergreens and pinecones. Raffle it for a fundraiser!

- Pound Flowers and create unique artwork!

- Plan a spring trip to the local
park or gardens for a picnic!
- Plan a shopping list for a trip to the local
nursery to stock up on gardening supplies and plants for spring!
