The holiday season is a festive time
of year, with increased activity and excitement. For many this
is a special time, generating happy memories and anticipation.
However, for individuals with dementia - it can be a disruptive
time. Allowing our residents to enjoy the holidays, while not
provoking behavioral or emotional disturbances is a challenge
to all care givers. Consider the following standards for managing
behavioral symptoms as you plan your Holiday schedule.....
Activities
for Specific Behaviors
Wandering
: Environmental programs, life skill activities, rummage
areas, sensory trails, walking clubs, quiet time programs, tea
time, diversional activity zones, cluster programming, incorporate
them into your day.
Anxiety
: Consistent routines, anticipate and acknowledge needs,
nurturing tasks, meaningful tasks to occupy time, activities
focusing on individual needs, reminiscing.
Weeping/Crying
: Involvement in grooming activity, music, baking and cooking,
pet therapy, hand massages, Mr. Happy.
Calling out/yelling : Quiet time programs, a balance
of active and passive stim, Snoezenlen, hand massages, aromatherapy,
relaxation program.
Physically
Disruptive/Aggressive : Physical activities, directed throwing,
walking, having a snack, tearing pictures from a magazine, Mr.
Happy.
