Preventing Behavorial Symptoms

The holiday season is a festive time of year, with increased activity and excitement. For many this is a special time, generating happy memories and anticipation. However, for individuals with dementia - it can be a disruptive time. Allowing our residents to enjoy the holidays, while not provoking behavioral or emotional disturbances is a challenge to all care givers. Consider the following standards for managing behavioral symptoms as you plan your Holiday schedule.....

Routines provide consistency and comfort. Changes in routines are unsettling. Develop a program based on the cluster format which balances periods of active activities, diversional tasks, snacks and periods of rest.

Life skill activities allow success in familiar tasks. Life rituals provide comfort and opportunity for reminiscence.

Active activities relieve stress, anxiety and anger in an acceptable manner. Formal periods of rest and relaxation are essential to a balanced day. Too much stimulation or constant activity can be stressful.

Environmental programming allows activities and diversions to be available to the interdisciplinary staff. This also ensures materials are present when they are needed.
